Above is my circa 1997 Tascam 564 MD Portastudio 564 with my producer, Mouse. The 564 is still an incredible multi-tracker and a seriously capable machine. It sports excellent digital sound quality and operates in a manner much like a cassette-based Portastudio. In 1996, the 564 was Tascam's first foray into digital Portastudios, and it was (and is) a total winner. It's analog mixer section is awesome, and it's a true pleasure to use. It was also my entry into the world of digital recording, after years of experience with my Tascam cassette Portastudios. I can only say good things about this machine, it's still incredible. The only downside is MiniDiscs have to be purchased online from a few sources, as the MD format was never widely adopted, unfortunately.
