Popping sound on recording

Evening

I'm really struggling to eliminate a low but audible popping / quick crackle sound when recording using my guitar and bass (less apparent on bass ). I'm recording using a scarlett 2/2 and using the line in. I've tried different cables , guitars, headphones, headphone cables, both line ins, all to no avail. It is sporadic... every fee seconds but no pattern. Any pointers greatly appreciated.

The usual first thing to try is to increase the record buffer. It's either in the Scarlett Mix Control or in Reaper settings.
